Raan Guhagar 
Our Story
Raan Guhagar is an eco-living hostel on the Konkan coast at Are village, Guhagar taluka, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, India — about 4 km from Guhagar bus stand, with Chiplun as the railhead. “Raan” in Marathi means wild. The project treats wilderness as something to live inside, not fence off. The site sits by a flowing river and dense protected forest, with a permaculture farm, pool, outdoor showers, yoga shala, hammocks, badminton, table tennis, board games, a mini-library, and several workspaces. Operations are run by women from Are village. The stated purpose is conservation through livelihoods: keep forests, farms, rivers, and villages intact by giving local people dignified income from slow tourism. It is built for solo travellers, backpackers, artists, and digital nomads on longer stays — not weekend party groups. Minimum stay is 3 nights (4 on long weekends and 13 Dec–9 Jan). Spaces are non-air-conditioned. House rules: no alcohol, no smoking, no single-use plastic, no loud music, no pets, no guests under 18, no groups larger than 4. Stay types on the site: 6-bed mixed dorm and 6-bed female dorm; tiny jungle cabins; jungle cottages. Food is cooked by village women, pre-ordered at reception, not included in the bed rate. One vegetarian and one non-vegetarian option per meal. Lactose-free and gluten-free can be arranged; Jain, Halal, and Kosher menus are not offered. No packaged food, no room service, no eating in rooms. This is a hostel and local enterprise, not a cooperative land-share or for-sale eco-village. “Joining” means booking a stay.

Day-to-day operations are run by women from Are village. Strategic ownership is not described as sociocracy or a resident assembly.
Membership Process
No residential membership. Stays are hostel bookings. Date changes free until one week before arrival; 25% cancel fee beyond that; no refund inside one week.
Our Vision
Protect Konkan forests, farms, rivers, and villages by running a slow eco-hostel that pays Are village women dignified wages and teaches guests to live with the wild instead of consuming it.
