Our Story
Heartwood Cohousing is a multigenerational cohousing neighborhood on 360 acres outside Bayfield, about 20–25 minutes east of Durango in southwest Colorado. Homes sit clustered on a few acres; more than 95% of the land stays open as woodland, meadow, and irrigated pasture. Elevation is about 7,100 ft, where Four Corners red-rock desert meets the San Juan Mountains. Phase 1 (moved in 2000) has 24 privately owned homes. Phase 2 adds 14 homes, with construction underway toward move-in in 2026. Shared amenities include a Common House and village green, guest rooms, workshop, greenhouse, raised beds, henhouse, exercise room, library, tennis/pickleball and basketball, barns, a yurt, hot tub, sledding hill, and bonfire circle. About 65–67 irrigated acres support horses, llamas, and cattle. Seven miles of trails run the property. Each home and lot is individually owned under an HOA. Shared meals and events are optional. High-speed internet (100+ Mbps) and Durango–La Plata County Airport (~25 minutes) support remote work. The community hosts monthly virtual tours (15th of the month, 3:00 PM Mountain) and is openly seeking Phase 2 households. This is private-home cohousing with shared land — not a shared-income commune.
