Our Story

A living example of how people and nature can thrive together. It all started in 2012 with La Ecovilla Original. This former 42-acre cattle farm in the heart of Costa Rica was lovingly transformed into a thriving, regenerated edible forest and sustainable residential community. We believe true community grows when we honor both our shared values and the natural world around us. In 2023, we expanded with Ecovilla San Mateo. We regenerated 220 hectares of a former petting zoo into vibrant, healthy land crossed by the Machuca River. The project was thoughtfully designed for sustainable homes, meaningful human connection, and a truly healthy lifestyle. Ecovilla is not an escape from reality — it’s the conscious creation of a better one. Here, sustainability, community, and quality of life work together seamlessly. It’s a place where children grow up exploring nature, where people share and grow together, and where living well feels completely natural.

Lifestyle Notes

What we do share are the common areas, where we can gather for a variety of activities, such as movement classes, kids’ activities, workshops, potluck dinners and more! Participation is always optional, everyone is encouraged to decide how socially engaged they want to be. We place great value on what we call a Gift Economy, where neighbors are encouraged to share their unique gifts and passions with the community. This could be anything from offering a yoga class to sharing a batch of freshly baked cookies. Over time, some neighbors grow so close that they become like an extended family: sharing laughter, support, and moments that make everyday life feel richer and more meaningful. It’s a bond that goes beyond just living near each other. It’s about finding a true sense of belonging and knowing you’re surrounded by people who are on a similar journey to build a more coherent life for themselves and their families.

Decision Making

Membership Process

The first step is to meet with one of our property team members. During this meeting, they will take the time to get to know you, share details about the project, and together, you can determine if there is a mutual fit. Generally, people who feel drawn to our project are deeply aligned with its vision, making them ideal future neighbors. The legal structure of the project is a condominium, which means that you will own your lot and also co-own all the surrounding common areas. These include natural spaces such as a private reserve, parks, and a river, as well as shared amenities like pools, sports areas, yoga shalas, community kitchen, a permaculture garden, and playgrounds. Each lot comes with the following infrastructure: water supplied from wells, underground electricity, fiber-optic internet, and an ecological treatment plant (BioNest) for your grey and black water. This eliminates the need to build a septic tank.

Our Vision

We believe it’s possible to live a more beautiful life through deeper connection with ourselves, each other and nature. So we’re all taking the leap. Our vision of community doesn’t sacrifice individuality— it welcomes each person’s needs and journey with compassion. And we aim to create a space where each of us can step into our fullness and gifts. We know that we are all one and we are all nature. Not separate from it. And so we do our best to respect and nurture all forms of life. And in doing that, we respect and nurture ourselves. We know that diversity is essential here to the web of life and to community. It strengthens us. We trust in this exciting experiment, and are eager to learn in the process, even though we know it won’t always be easy. We seek to continue evolving and expanding on a personal level. And we recognize that positive change in our world begins with transformation in ourselves. In fact, the inner and outer change are beautifully intertwined. We know this community only works if we hold each other in the highest regard. And we know those kinds of nourishing, caring relationships take deep work—on our styles of communicating and on the invisible structures we carry with us. And we’re up for it. We’ve all sensed an invitation to be part of this community and we want to bring well-being to this place and its people. We know this work has begun. And we aim to be a new step on an ancient path. And with humility and playfulness, we just might have the potential to inspire others all over the world. And finally, we’ve come here because we believe in asking questions, like: What if radical change also involves beauty, joy and celebration? What if—instead of fear—we choose to respond with love? Instead of waiting for perfection, what if this is good enough to get going?
